The Use of Effective Dose as a Radiological Protection Quantity

Draft document: The Use of Effective Dose as a Radiological Protection Quantity
Submitted by Stefan Thierfeldt, German Commission on Radiological Protection (SSK)
Commenting as an individual

The statement (3rd bullet point in the list of Main Points, lines 195-198): “The Commission considers that the use of equivalent dose to set limits on organ/tissue doses to prevent tissue reactions should be discontinued, but that current limits can continue to be applied until new general recommendations are issued.” may be confusing to the reader, as the rest of text continues to use the concept of equivalent dose for dose limits for organs and tissues (skin, lens of the eye). Limitation of effective dose will also limit exposure for most organs/tissue in an appropriate way, but not for all. The statement should therefore address an alternative concept for the future or should be omitted.
